Spain international of Ghanaian descent Nico Williams regrets his decision to commit his future to Athletic Bilbao after signing a long-term contract extension.

Williams’ new deal will keep him at the San Mames until 2035, a move he chose over a potential transfer to Barcelona in the past transfer windows. At the time, the extension was seen as a strong statement of loyalty, but recent developments appear to have changed the player’s perspective.

The 23-year-old attacker is reportedly unhappy with the current situation of Athletic Bilbao. The enforcement of the transfer ban has shaken Williams’ belief in Athletic Bilbao’s short- and long-term ambitions.

Williams is currently in a fragile psychological state, with the situation beginning to affect both his on-field performances and the overall mood within the dressing room. His visible frustration is said to be contributing to a drop in morale among teammates.

This season, Williams has made 26 appearances for Athletic Bilbao, registering four goals and six assists. Despite his contributions, the club has struggled for consistency and currently sits 10th in the La Liga table with 28 points, adding further pressure to an already delicate situation.

The enterprising winger gained prominence after inspiring Spain’s Euro 2024 Championship success and also helping Athletic Bilbao to annex the Copa del Rey for the first time 40-years last season.
