South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has caught the eye of Chicago Fire FC coach Gregg Berhalter after making his first pre-season appearance for the Major League Soccer side.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Fire from Orlando Pirates last year just ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, recently reported to the club’s pre-season camp and immediately impressed with his performance.

Mbokazi featured in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over LA Galaxy, showcasing his defensive skills and composure on the ball. After the match, Berhalter singled out the young defender for praise.

“I thought he did well,” Berhalter said when asked for his opinion on Mbokazi’s display by Fair Point Football.

“He was very good in the duels, had some good build-up play, and overall delivered a strong performance.”

The former Pirates vice-captain is expected to thrive in Chicago, building on the promise he showed during his time in the South African top flight.

Mbokazi will not be the only South African in the squad, with Puso Dithejane, who joined from TS Galaxy, also part of Berhalter’s plans.

The coach has lauded Dithejane as a strong addition, reflecting the club’s ambition to assemble a competitive roster.

As the 2026 MLS regular season kicks off on Saturday, February 21, both Mbokazi and Dithejane will be hoping to make a lasting impact in the United States.
