Former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has reflected on his time working alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and hinted at a possible return to South African football in the future.
Folz, now at the helm of Golden Arrows, joined Sundowns as Mngqithi’s assistant at the start of the 2024/25 season, taking over following Rulani Mokwena’s departure.
His stint in South Africa also includes managerial spells with AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants, marking him as a familiar face in the local football scene.
“Coach Manqoba [Mngqithi] is not only a great coach, but he is also a fantastic human being,” Folz told KICK OFF Magazine.
“I got to know him since my arrival in South Africa back in 2022. Since then, we have been discussing and sharing ideas very often.
“I can only say good things about him. He is a top man and a top coach. Working with him was an absolute pleasure at Sundowns.”
The 35-year-old French coach did not dismiss the idea of returning to the country, expressing his admiration for both South African football and its supporters.
“I love South Africa, the country as a whole, football there, and its fans. Never say never,” he added.
“The Betway Premiership is one of the top leagues in Africa, with very good teams and quality players. It’s a league I obviously know very well, in deep detail.
“I do think there are still margins to make it even greater, but I will keep these points for myself. South African football has a lot of positive attributes, and the fans are a big part of it.”
