Head coach of Morocco, Walid Regragui has emerged as a potential candidate to succeed Italian tactician Roberto de Zerbi at Olympique Marseille, Africasoccer.com can report.
Regragui is among several top coaches reportedly being considered for the vacant coaching job at Marseille. The French Ligue 1 giants are currently without a substantive coach following the departure of Roberto de Zerbi early this week.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion gaffer was shown the exit door after Marseille’s 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain in the French Ligue 1 clash.
Despite no official negotiations, Regragui has been offered to Marseille’s hierarchy and is being considered for the job. Other contenders for the Marseille job include Franco-Senegalese trainer Habib Beye, Nigeria tactician Eric Chelle and Portuguese gaffer Sergio Conceicao.
Marseille currently occupies fourth place in the French league standings with 39 points, 12 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while the team has been eliminated from the Champions League.
The French club are preparing to face Strasbourg on Saturday, February 14, in the 22nd round of the French League.
At the moment, Regragui remains the head coach of the Atlas Lions, who are gearing up for the 2026 World Cup tournament, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Earlier reports suggested Regragui has resigned from his position as manager of the Morocco national team. But the Royal Moroccan Football Federation swiftly denied such reports.
Regragui guided the Atlas Lions to the semifinal of the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first African nation to achieve such feat in World football.
Just recently, Regragui led the team to the finals of the AFCON tournament, where the team succumbed to a narrow defeat to Senegal.
