Bilal El Khannous has struggled to regain the spark he showed before the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, where he played a pivotal role in Morocco’s run to the final.
The disappointment of falling short on the continental stage appears to have lingered, with fatigue and disrupted rhythm affecting his performances in the Bundesliga.
In Stuttgart’s recent 2-1 loss to St. Pauli, El Khannous was taken off at halftime after a subdued display.
Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß explained the move at a post-match press conference: “I wasn’t satisfied with his performance. We felt the team needed fresh energy, which is why we made the change.”
Hoeneß added that there was no need to address the substitution with the player immediately, saying, “We will discuss it calmly later.”
Earlier in the season, El Khannous had impressed consistently, earning a regular spot in Stuttgart’s lineup.
In 25 appearances across all competitions, the 21-year-old had scored six goals and contributed four assists, showcasing his vision and maturity in midfield.
The contrast between his strong first half of the campaign and his recent struggles has raised questions about his consistency.
It has also sparked speculation about his future, with reports from England linking him to a possible Premier League move, including interest from Newcastle United.
Currently on loan from Leicester City, El Khannous’s next few weeks at Stuttgart may prove decisive in determining whether he secures a permanent transfer or returns to England.
