Samuel Asamoah: Defensive midfielder weighs up options after leaving last club

Samuel Asamoah has left Chinese side GX Pingguo after his contract expired, becoming a free agent following the completion of his move to the “Without Club” pool on 2026-02-09. The 31-year-old defensive midfielder departs on a free transfer, with no fee involved, and enters the market with a current valuation of €125k.

The Togo- and Belgium-affiliated midfielder, officially registered as holding dual nationality, now finds himself available to sign for a new employer after a one-year stint at GX Pingguo in China. His contract there ran from 2025-02-13 to 2026-02-09, after joining from Qingdao Red Lions, and was not renewed, triggering his transition into free agency rather than another club-to-club move.

Asamoah’s exit from GX Pingguo caps a three-club sequence over the last two years. He first left Romanian side FC U Craiova 1948 for Qingdao Red Lions in 2024, then switched within China from Qingdao to GX Pingguo in 2025, before now ending his spell in Chinese football altogether. With his registration currently listed as “Without Club,” his next destination is open, and he is eligible to move immediately outside of a traditional transfer window.

Born in Accra and standing at 1.66m, Asamoah is a specialist in the holding midfield role, described primarily as a defensive midfielder. Over his career he has built his reputation in Europe and Asia, moving from Qatar’s Aspire Academy to Belgium with KAS Eupen in 2012-13, then experiencing both the Belgian top flight and second tier with KAS Eupen, Oud-Heverlee Leuven (via loan), Sint-Truidense VV, and later Romania’s Liga 1 with FC U Craiova 1948, before crossing to China.

His market value trajectory peaked during his Sint-Truidense VV years, rising as high as €1.3m in mid-2019, before gradually declining as he moved into his late twenties and early thirties. By late 2025, while at GX Pingguo, his valuation stood at €125k, reflecting his status as an experienced, rather than emerging, option in midfield.

Asamoah’s club pathway underlines a career already marked by international mobility. From Aspire Academy in Qatar to multiple Belgian clubs, then Romania and China, he has spent large portions of his professional life abroad rather than in his nationality countries of Togo or Belgium. His current free-agent status continues that trend: his next contract is likely to see him once again playing outside those home nations, with no defined league or country yet attached to his profile.

With his latest deal now officially concluded on 2026-02-09 and no transfer fee due, Asamoah enters a critical phase of his career. At 31, he offers experience across several European and Asian leagues and remains a market-valued option at €125k. His next move will determine whether he extends his long-standing journey as an expatriate professional or seeks a return closer to his national roots, shaping the final chapters of a career that has already spanned Belgium, Romania, Qatar, and China.
