Lothar Matthäus has expressed surprise that Dayot Upamecano has still not signed his new Bayern Munich contract, despite widespread reports that an agreement has been reached.
Media in Germany claim the 27-year-old defender has already decided to extend his deal, and club officials recently insisted the signature is only a matter of time.
“Dayot Upamecano has signalled to Bayern that he will stay in Munich. The club has achieved its goal, but the question is: why hasn’t he signed the contract yet?” Matthäus wrote in his Sky column. He used a striking comparison, saying that if you fall in love “you don’t leave her for a year—you move towards each other,” arguing that Bayern have made a top offer and the situation should now be clear one way or the other.
Matthäus still expects Upamecano to remain at the club but warned that nothing is guaranteed until pen meets paper. He pointed to the influence of agents who may still be exploring other possibilities for their client.
From his perspective, if both sides truly agree, the extension should already be official and publicly confirmed to end speculation.
