In the Champions League play-offs, FC Basel had a successful evening against Ludogorets. In the away match, the Swiss club secured a 4-2 victory against the Bulgarian side. Three African players started the match for FC Basel: Egyptians Mohamed Salah and Mohamed El Nenny, and Ivorian Giovanni Sio. Salah opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and although Ludogorets equalized, Salah scored his second to level the score. Later, Giovanni Sio and Schär (from the penalty spot) contributed to FC Basel’s victory, giving them an advantage going into the return match.
