CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has announced plans to review the Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Code, aiming to give judicial bodies greater authority to impose stricter sanctions following the chaotic 2025 AFCON final in Morocco.
In a media statement, Motsepe said he has called an extraordinary meeting of the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO), the organisation’s highest decision-making body outside the Annual Ordinary General Assembly, to examine the regulations governing CAF competitions.
“I have called a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO), which is the highest decision-making body in CAF, outside the CAF Annual Ordinary General Assembly; to review the CAF Regulations, including the CAF Disciplinary Code, to ensure that the CAF Judicial Bodies have the power to impose appropriate and dissuasive sanctions for serious violations of the CAF Statutes, Regulations, Disciplinary Code and for behaviour and conduct that seriously undermines or harms the reputation, integrity, respect and global competitiveness of African Football and CAF Competitions,” Motsepe said.
The announcement comes after the AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco was disrupted by controversy over a late penalty awarded to the hosts. Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw ordered a player walk-off in protest, delaying the match for over ten minutes until captain Sadio Mane persuaded his teammates to return. The incident prompted CAF’s Disciplinary Committee to sanction both national federations and officials involved.
Motsepe’s push for the Disciplinary Code review underscores CAF’s commitment to strengthening governance and ensuring that future violations are met with sanctions capable of safeguarding the integrity and reputation of African football.
