Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has sought to calm speculation surrounding Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future, suggesting the French international of Congolese descent is more likely to remain at Selhurst Park beyond the January window.

Speaking ahead of Palace’s meeting with Nottingham Forest, Glasner struck a composed tone despite mounting external pressure, insisting the ongoing transfer noise has not shaken his confidence or disrupted his sleep.

Palace enter the fixture in a difficult spell, both on and off the pitch. Forest’s unbeaten run in their last 10 competitive meetings with the Eagles adds to the challenge, while uncertainty around key figures has deepened concerns among supporters.

The recent departure of Marc Guehi, persistent reports linking Mateta with a move away, and speculation over Glasner’s own future at the end of the season have combined to place the club firmly under the spotlight.

Addressing Mateta’s absence from the squad, Glasner confirmed the decision was linked to the weight of speculation surrounding the French forward.

With Forest and several Italian clubs credited with interest, the Palace boss explained that the circumstances made it difficult for the striker to perform at his best.

Glasner stressed that when players are distracted, whether by football-related rumours or personal issues, they are unable to contribute at the required level.

However, Glasner’s comments went beyond a simple explanation for Mateta’s omission. He appeared to dismiss the idea that a transfer is imminent, instead outlining a scenario in which the striker remains at Palace and rediscovers his motivation.

Glasner highlighted Mateta’s long-term ambition of representing France at the World Cup, suggesting that such a goal would demand a renewed focus and improved performances rather than a hurried mid-season move.
