Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad has asked to leave the club before the close of the winter transfer window, amid growing frustration over his recent exclusion from the starting lineup.

Awad was reportedly shocked to learn that fellow keeper Mohamed Sobhi would start ahead of him in the Egyptian Premier League match against Petrojet. This came despite Awad’s strong performance in Zamalek’s recent CAF Confederation Cup clash against Al Masry, where the technical staff, led by Moatamed Gamal, were said to be pleased with his display.

A source close to the player told Kooora that Awad believes sporting director John Edward bears responsibility for his situation, especially after Awad rejected Edward’s suggestion to leave last summer following the signing of goalkeeper El Mahdi Soliman. Awad is understood to be deeply unhappy about being relegated to the bench and feels the decision does not reflect his efforts or form.

So far, Awad has not received any official offers in the current transfer window, but his desire to depart remains strong.

The goalkeeper joined Zamalek in the summer of 2019 from Saudi club Al Wahda, and his future with the White Knights now appears uncertain.
