Hugo Broos, the head coach of the South African national team, believes that Tunisia, their upcoming opponent, underestimated Namibia, leading to their surprising defeat.
Tunisia suffered a major upset in the opening round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, losing 1-0 to Namibia in Group F.
South Africa is set to face Tunisia on Wednesday at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in the third round of the group stage.
Mali currently tops the group with four points, followed by South Africa with three points and Namibia with the same points but a goal difference.
Tunisia sits at the bottom with one point.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Hugo Broos stated, “Our goal is to qualify for the second round and advance from the group stage.”
“Our opponents have a slight advantage over us due to having an extra day of rest,” he continued.
“But after our victory last Sunday, we received a significant boost, and we will be fully prepared,” he added.
The South African coach emphasized, “We know that Tunisia is a great team, and I believe they underestimated Namibia, but we will analyze their performance against Mali.”
Hugo Broos concluded his remarks, saying, “It will be a heated match; they are under pressure, and the same applies to us if we lose. The situation is deceptive.”
