Unfortunately, there’s bad news for Burundian athletics as Francine Niyonsaba, the winner of the 800 meters at the Diamond League stage in Shanghai, has had to withdraw from the upcoming World Championships. The Burundian athlete is dealing with a strain she incurred during training. Her withdrawal is not only a setback for her country but also for the broader African representation at the championships.
At just 20 years old, Niyonsaba showcased her talent by winning the 800 meters race at the Eugene meeting on June 1, where she recorded the best world performance of the year. This victory came ahead of strong competitors such as Brenda Martinez and the Kenyan Janeth Jopkosgei. Niyonsaba continued her success by winning at the Areva meeting in Paris, further confirming her excellent form. However, the unfortunate injury has now prevented her from participating in the World Championships, where she was considered a strong contender for a medal.
