Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has urged a reduction in the number of foreign players allowed in the Egyptian Premier League, arguing that the change is essential for the national team’s long-term improvement.
Speaking at a press conference, he explained that several structural adjustments are needed if Egypt are to progress, with limiting foreign spots high on his list of priorities.
Hassan noted that many clubs currently rely on foreign strikers and full-backs on both the right and left sides, which restricts opportunities for local talents in key positions. In his view, the ideal scenario would see the quota cut to three foreign players per club, while keeping the special status that allows Palestinian players to be registered as locals.
The Egypt coach stressed that his staff are closely monitoring dual-nationality players who could represent the Pharaohs in the future. He revealed that contact has already been made with at least one such player, although the individual has not yet made a final decision about playing for Egypt.
Hassan believes the domestic league still boasts plenty of talent, but thinks it needs stronger support and smarter squad-building to reach its full potential. He called for the revival of big fan-based clubs and the return of large crowds in stadiums to help restore the league’s intensity and atmosphere.
Reflecting on Egypt’s recent run to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, Hassan pointed out that the team had to overcome difficult circumstances during the tournament.
He suggested that these challenges had an impact on certain results but insisted that with better planning at league level, the national team can aim even higher in future competitions.
