Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta finds himself in a delicate position as he considers his next move, with Juventus and Aston Villa both expressing interest in the Republic of Congo international.

The French international of Congolese descent, contracted to Palace until 2027, has made it clear he is ready for a new challenge, particularly eyeing a move to a top European club. Interest from Juventus has intensified those ambitions, with the Italian side pushing for a January transfer.

However, Palace have remained steadfast in their stance, valuing the striker at around £35 million, significantly higher than Juventus’ reported £25 million bid, which even included the possibility of an initial loan.

Despite his eagerness, Mateta is having to remain patient. Palace have long anticipated offers for their star forward but were reluctant to sanction a mid-season sale, fearing the squad could destabilize further.

With Marc Guehi already departed and manager Oliver Glasner set to leave, the club wants to secure a replacement manager before negotiating potential exits for key players such as Mateta, Adam Wharton, Daniel Muñoz, and Maxence Lacroix.

Villa interest adds Premier League dimension

Aston Villa have also expressed interest, holding exploratory talks that could see Mateta remain in the Premier League.

Sources suggest the striker would prefer a move to Juventus over Villa, but the coming days will determine whether Palace soften their position and allow him to leave. Losing Mateta while navigating Guehi’s departure would complicate the squad’s stability, particularly with Palace striving to maintain form in the league.

Mateta has contributed eight goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season, justifying Palace’s valuation in their eyes. Juventus, unable to bridge the gap, have considered alternatives such as Joshua Zirkzee and Youssef En-Nesyri, but Mateta remains their primary target.
