ZESCO United CEO Kelvin Mutafu has expressed strong confidence that his team can secure victories in both upcoming CAF Confederation Cup clashes against Kaizer Chiefs.
The two sides meet in Group D this Sunday, January 25, at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia. Both teams are still searching for their first win in the group, making the encounter crucial for their hopes of progressing.
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit third with one point from two games, while ZESCO remain without a point after suffering defeats in their opening matches against Egyptian clubs Zamalek and Al Masry, who occupy the top two positions in the group.
With the stakes high, Mutafu told ZNBC’s Kwacha Good Morning Zambia on Sunday that he believes ZESCO has what it takes to beat Chiefs both home and away.
“Kaizer Chiefs, I think, have been the customers of ZESCO,” he said.
“We can do a double, because what we need to do is we win them home and away, [to] bring them [ZESCO] back in the race.
“They are very bitter. ZESCO has the character to turn the tables against Kaizer Chiefs. So I’m just appealing to the fans to come in numbers,” he added.
The two clubs last met in 2019, when ZESCO recorded a 5-2 aggregate victory over the South African giants in the second preliminary round, winning both home and away.
