Aston Villa’s search for a new striker has taken a fresh turn, with Jean-Philippe Mateta emerging as a potential target amid increasingly complicated negotiations for Tammy Abraham.

As talks over a reunion with Abraham threaten to unravel, Villa are exploring alternative options, and the Crystal Palace forward has now moved firmly onto their radar.

Abraham deal hits complications

Abraham remains a popular name at Villa Park after his prolific loan spell during the 2018–19 Championship campaign, when he scored 26 goals in 40 appearances to help secure promotion to the Premier League.

Since then, the England international of Nigerian descent has endured a mixed spell abroad and is currently on loan at Besiktas from Roma, where he has found the net seven times in 18 matches.

Roma are understood to be open to a permanent sale, potentially paving the way for Abraham’s return to England. However, according to David Ornstein, negotiations involving Villa, Roma and Besiktas have become increasingly tense, forcing Unai Emery’s side to consider other striker profiles as the January window progresses.

Mateta enters the frame

With Abraham talks stalling, Villa have turned their attention to Mateta, who is believed to be open to a move should the right opportunity arise. Ornstein reported: “EXCL: Aston Villa express interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta + Crystal Palace evaluating move for Evan Guessand. #AVFC studying 28yo as striker option amid complex negotiations with Besiktas over Tammy Abraham.”

Mateta’s name has already circulated widely in recent weeks. Juventus made an enquiry last week, but Palace’s valuation of around £40 million quickly cooled interest, with the Italian giants unwilling to meet that price.

Palace face a contract dilemma

The French striker, who has Congolese heritage, will turn 29 at the end of the season and is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. That situation places Palace at a crossroads: cash in this year or risk losing him for a reduced fee, or even on a free transfer, in 2026.

Despite the speculation, Palace are unlikely to sanction a mid-season move to a Premier League rival.

Mateta has started all 23 league matches this season, scoring eight goals, and remains central to Oliver Glasner’s plans.
