Senegal captain Idrissa Gueye expressed his immense joy following his country’s triumph in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Lions of Teranga on Sunday night laboured to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the final of the 35th edition of the AFCON.
Speaking after the game, Gueye stressed that the victory was granted by God, while acknowledging all the difficulties the team had to endure throughout the match.
“First and foremost, I say thank God, we wanted to win this cup. We had no part in it, God granted us this victory and I congratulate my teammates and thank all the Senegalese. We have always had the support of the staff and some of the players who were sick, we thought about them a lot, and many of the fans also may have faced difficulties, but all these difficulties came with a positive result this time,” Gueye told beIN SPORTS after the game.
Gueye continued, “We say thank God once again, we dedicate everything to Senegal. We said that we came and we would play 7 matches. We knew that we could win the cup. It was very complicated, but in the end we did not give up. We believed in ourselves. We thank God and we will return with the cup to Senegal.”
The victory over Morocco has earned Senegal their second AFCON title, after winning their first in 2021.
