Olympique de Marseille (OM) had their first friendly match of the season against Sion, which ended in a 1-1 draw before going into a penalty shootout. The match saw OM being a bit more brilliant than PSG, who suffered a 3-1 defeat against Sturm Graz in Austria.
In the friendly against Sion, OM scored their goal in the 9th minute through a header by Mendes following a corner. However, Sion managed to equalize late in the match with a goal from Karlen in the 88th minute.
The Marseille club then engaged in an anecdotal penalty shootout, losing 4-3. Despite the shootout result being of less importance in friendly matches, it adds to the overall context of the preseason preparations for both teams.
For the first half, OM’s lineup included Samba, Abdallah, Fanni, Mendes, Morel, Abdullah, A. Ayew, N’Doumbou, Amalfitano, Santiago, and J. Ayew. In the second half, there were changes with Bracigliano coming in for Samba in the 62nd minute, and Abergel, Diawara, Aloe, Mendy, Anani, Cheyrou, Azouni, Amalfitano, Araai, and Gignac also featuring.
Looking ahead, OM is scheduled to face Porto in their next friendly match on Saturday as part of their preseason preparations. These matches allow teams to assess their squad, try different formations, and build fitness ahead of the upcoming season.
