Burkina Faso’s coach Brama Traore spoke candidly after his team’s 1-0 loss to Algeria in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, a match that saw the Algerians clinch their knockout stage spot atop Group E with six points.

Despite the heartbreak, Traore praised his players’ grit in a physically grueling clash where a penalty decided the outcome.

Traore highlighted the tactical setup that kept Algeria at bay for much of the game. “We wanted to win this match. Laying against Algeria will always be difficult but we really gave it our all. Our tactical approach was based on all the analysis we had made,” he said. “We had to close them off because we know how good they are but I think our strategy was not bad at all.”

The turning point came in the 23rd minute when Ismahila Ouedraogo fouled Rayan Aït-Nouri, allowing Riyad Mahrez to convert from the spot.

Traore remained upbeat, noting, “They were awarded a penalty which completely changed the complexion of the game but be that as it may, we really gave them a good run.”

Burkina Faso, now level on three points with Sudan after their 1-0 upset over Equatorial Guinea, face a decisive New Year’s Eve showdown for the group’s second knockout berth
