Sudan’s Mohamed Mamoun earned Man of the Match honors after his team pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in their AFCON 2025 group stage clash at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.
The underdogs, ranked 117th globally, defied the odds on December 28, 2025, thanks to a deflected free-kick that found the net off Equatorial Guinea defender Saul Coco in the 74th minute.
Equatorial Guinea controlled much of the game, creating early chances like Pedro Obiang’s rebound effort that sailed just over the bar. They kept pressing after halftime, with substitute Jose Nabil firing narrowly wide on a counter. Sudan, fresh off a loss to Algeria, stayed resilient, clearing Mohamed Eisa’s shot off the line and nearly adding to the score through Yasir Mozamil’s cross.
The win reignites Sudan’s hopes of advancing, while Equatorial Guinea now faces a tough matchup against group favorites Algeria. Coach James Kwesi Appiah’s side showed toughness despite being on the back foot for long spells.
Sudan approaches their decisive group-stage finale against Burkina Faso on New Year’s Eve with everything on the line. Replicating this defensive brilliance could secure their spot in the Round of 16.
