Morocco head coach Walid Regragui believes this year’s Africa Cup of Nations could be the hardest to win in the tournament’s history, despite his side enjoying the advantage of playing on home soil. Speaking as the 2025 AFCON gathers pace across the country, Regragui said the level of preparation and ambition among the competing nations has made the contest more open and demanding than ever.

“Every team is ready,” he said. “We are in the best possible conditions, and everyone wants to win it.” The former international pointed to the high standards of organisation, from the quality of the pitches to accommodation, insisting that no excuses remain. “Whoever wins this one will deserve it even more than in previous years,” he added.

For Morocco, being among the favourites at this AFCON, the challenge is as much emotional as it is tactical. Regragui stressed the importance of home support, calling on fans to turn stadiums into intimidating arenas. “We need to feel like we are at home,” he said. “The atmosphere has to be electric.” As expectations rise, Morocco’s coach is clear-eyed about the task ahead: hosting the tournament may offer comfort, but it guarantees nothing.
