The CAF (Confederation of African Football) Extraordinary Assembly in Mahé, Seychelles, addressed not only the amendment of Algerian text regarding the eligibility conditions for the CAF presidency but also the acquisition of a new seat on the Executive Committee of the continental institution.
The COSAFA (Council of Southern Africa Football Associations), the largest southern zonal institution of CAF with 14 countries, was underrepresented with only four members on the Executive Committee, led by Issa Hayatou. This anomaly was rectified during the CAF General Assembly in Seychelles on Monday. The decision, now in effect, increases the number of voters on the Executive Committee to 13, one more than before, excluding the President of CAF. COSAFA, known as the most densely populated southern zonal union on the continent with 14 members, now has a more proportionate representation.
Suketa Patel, the President of the Seychelles Football Federation, leads the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations. COSAFA organizes the annual COSAFA Cup, featuring national teams from the confederation, as well as the COSAFA Women’s Championship for women’s national teams. However, it is yet to be clarified whether the new Executive Committee member from COSAFA will have the right to vote, especially considering the recent adoption of eligibility conditions for the presidency.
