Omar Marmoush was named Man of the Match after delivering a standout performance that helped Egypt secure a 2-1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe in their opening fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Pharaohs controlled large spells of the contest, enjoying the majority of possession and setting the tempo, but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Zimbabwean defence in the early stages. Despite their dominance, clear chances were hard to come by as Zimbabwe remained compact and resolute.
Against the run of play, Zimbabwe took a surprise lead in the 20th minute when Peter Dube applied a clinical finish to a well-timed pass from E. Jalai. The goal gave the Mighty Warriors confidence, and they held onto their advantage for much of the game, soaking up sustained pressure as Egypt continued to push forward.
Egypt’s persistence eventually paid off in the 64th minute when Marmoush produced a moment of brilliance, firing home a superb equaliser to draw the Pharaohs level and swing the momentum firmly in their favour. The goal lifted Egypt and set the tone for a strong finish, as they went on to complete the comeback and claim all three points.
Marmoush’s hard work and opening goal proved pivotal on the night, earning him the Man of the Match award as Egypt bagged all three points in their first match.
