AFCON 2025: Morocco open campaign with victory over Comoros in front of 60,180 fans
The opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations attracted a massive crowd of 60,180 spectators as host nation Morocco faced Comoros in front of an electric atmosphere.
Both teams began the contest with clear intent, showing determination and technical quality as they battled for control in midfield and sought openings in the final third. The early stages were closely contested, with neither side willing to concede ground as the tension inside the stadium steadily grew.
Morocco eventually broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through a moment of brilliance from Brahim Díaz. The forward showed great composure and technique to find the net, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters and giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Comoros responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, applying pressure and testing Morocco’s defensive organisation.
However, the Moroccan backline remained disciplined and compact, limiting their opponents to half-chances and keeping clear opportunities to a minimum.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Ayoub El Kaabi struck with a well-taken finish inside the penalty area. The striker’s sharp movement and clinical touch effectively sealed the outcome and underlined Morocco’s control of the contest.
Comoros continued to fight until the final whistle but were unable to find a breakthrough as Morocco’s defence stood firm to preserve the clean sheet. It was a confident and assured performance from the hosts, who will draw encouragement from a strong start to their AFCON campaign.
The home fans enjoyed the win and are expected to fill the Stadium in the remaining matches of the Atlas Lions.
