AFCON 2025: Morocco star Brahim Diaz scores first goal at tournament

Morocco international Brahim Diaz has etched his name into the history books of the Africa Cup of Nations, netting the opening goal at the tournament being held in Morocco.

Diaz, who plies his trade for Spanish giants, Real Madrid opened the scoring for the Atlas Lions against Comoros after the halftime break, following a pulsating goalless drawn game in the first half.

The enterprising attacker found the net in the 55th-minute after being set up by Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Before netting the match opener, Morocco had missed a penalty through Soufiane Rahimi in the 11th-minute.

Having scored the first goal of the tournament, the former AC Milan star will be hoping to contribute significantly for Morocco, who are seeking to secure the title on home soil.

As Morocco chase their second AFCON title on home soil, the former AC Milan attacker and Madrid star is expected to play a crucial role, considering his qualities in the game.

Diaz, born in Málaga, Spain opted to represent Morocco at the international level in 2024 and has since established himself as a key member of the team.

He made his debut for Morocco in March 2024 against Angola and has since made 15 appearances for the Atlas Lions, scoring eights in the process.

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has been scheduled to take place from December 21 to January 18, 2026, with 24 countries battling for the ultimate title.
