We want to win AFCON and World Cup, says Egypt star Omar Marmoush
Egypt and Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has expressed unwavering confidence in the Pharaohs ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to kick off this Sunday.
Despite being Africa’s most successful nation in the tournament with seven titles, Egypt has not lifted the trophy since 2010. The team has been drawn into Group B, facing South Africa, Angola, and an additional opponent.
Marmoush is optimistic about Egypt’s chances, insisting the squad aims not only to reclaim continental glory but also to make a mark at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“We’ll win the African Cup of Nations, of course, and then we’ll win the World Cup,” Marmoush told the Man City website.
“We want to show ourselves in a good way, and we can dream of winning the tournament too, or of reaching a certain stage. We’re not going just to make a name for ourselves.”
Reflecting on past tournaments, Marmoush added, “We went to the World Cup and that’s it. With the players we have, with the team we have, with the quality we have, and as the Egyptian national team, we are the best team in Africa.
“And [next summer] you go to the World Cup to pass the group stage, to show the world who you are, not just to be present,” he added.
The Pharaohs will hope Marmoush’s confidence translates into performance as they aim to end a 15-year wait for AFCON success.
