‘The club owes you nothing’ – Graeme Souness criticizes Mohamed Salah as transfer talk grows

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has thrown his weight behind manager Arne Slot amid ongoing controversy involving Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.

Salah, 33, returned to the Liverpool squad for last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Brighton after being sidelined due to poor form. The winger had struggled in recent matches, sparking debate over his role under Slot.

The drama reignited after Salah linked up with his international teammates ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

The forward had claimed his relationship with Slot had broken down and accused the club of throwing him “under the bus” following a 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

Speaking to Liverpool.com, Souness sided with Slot, emphasizing the club’s primacy over individual players.

“The club owes you nothing. For him to come out and say, ‘I don’t have to fight every day in training for my place because of what I’ve done for this club,’ and then follow up with, ‘No one’s bigger than the club’ – he’s acting like he’s bigger than the club,” Souness said.

He added, “Someone needs to tell him he’s not and he never will be. No player will ever be bigger than that football club. It’s an institution. The manager has been great in the way he’s dealt with it.

“What promises? That every month the money will be in his bank account? Other than that, I can’t see what other promises any player could hope for from a football club.”

Despite apparent resolution between Slot and Salah, speculation over a January transfer persists. Saudi Pro League clubs are reportedly interested in the winger, who was the Premier League’s standout player last season.

Bids are expected as Salah evaluates his next career move, leaving Liverpool supporters anxious over the future of their star forward.
