Renowned former Zamalek star, Afat Nassar, has raised concerns about Egypt’s recent reliance on individual play, emphasizing that this approach could pose challenges for the national team, particularly when facing well-organized opponents in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on the “Box to Box” program, Nassar pointed out the individual brilliance of Mozambique, highlighting moments of superiority, especially in positions such as the left-back against Mohamed Hani.
“We secured a fortunate draw in the final moments of the match, and it was possible for us to lose.
Overall, our performance was subpar, and the midfield did not reach its best levels, even with the presence of Elneny and Hamdy Fathi,” commented Nassar.
Expressing dissatisfaction with coach Roy Vitoria’s performance, Nassar remarked, “Vitoria has not delivered what is expected of him so far, and even his statement about not competing for the Africa Cup of Nations should have been confronted, especially considering our significant history in this tournament.”
Addressing the upcoming Ghana clash, Nassar emphasized the need for victory, asserting that it is shameful to suggest Egypt playing for the “best third” position.
He pointed out the team’s strong need for a commanding midfield presence and acknowledged the capabilities of goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy.
Nassar recommended a strategic shift for the midfield in the next match, suggesting the inclusion of Marwan Atia alongside Imam Ashour and Hamdy Fathi due to their offensive inclinations, with the latter two positioned on the right and left, respectively.
Commenting on Ghana’s strengths, Nassar noted their formidable midfield and reliance on individual skills, similar to Egypt.
He urged Vitoria to deploy Mohamed Salah on the right wing to optimize his potential.
“There was a necessity to introduce Ahmed Fotouh on the left flank, especially as Mohamed Hamdi was below his usual standards, and also, on the right side, Mohamed Hani, considering the standout performance of Mozambique’s wingers,” concluded Nassar.
He concluded with well-wishes for Egypt in the upcoming encounter against Ghana.
