2025 Arab Cup: There are no small or big teams – Morocco coach Tarik Skitioui after win over Comoros
Morocco head coach Tarik Skitioui believes the ongoing Arab Cup has already shown that reputation counts for little, insisting every team must be treated with respect.
His comments followed the Atlas Lions’ 3–1 victory over Comoros in their opening Group C fixture, a result built on three first-half goals that allowed Morocco to control proceedings after the break.
Though the scoreline appeared comfortable, Skitioui was quick to highlight the level of effort required to secure the win.
He pointed to the pace and directness of Comoros as factors that demanded total concentration, warning that any relaxation could have led to an upset similar to those suffered by Tunisia and Qatar on the tournament’s opening day.
“Comoros are a tough side. Their wide players are quick, they transition well, and their defenders can launch dangerous long balls,” he said, stressing that Morocco’s discipline was crucial. He noted that Comoros’ strong showing in a previous game against Yemen proved they were anything but pushovers.
Skitioui said early results across the competition underline the unpredictability of this year’s edition.
“There are no big or small teams. What happens on the pitch is what matters,” he remarked, commending his squad for their focus and professionalism.
The coach praised the mentality of his players, describing their intensity and seriousness as key to sealing all three points.
With a solid lead established before half-time, Morocco absorbed pressure in the second period and looked to counter, even earning a penalty that could have extended the margin.
“What counts is that we started well,” Skitioui added. “The first match is always important, but the journey ahead remains long and demanding.”
The win puts Morocco in a promising position as the competition unfolds, yet their coach remains wary.
In a tournament already producing surprises, he says the team will need to maintain hunger and sharpness if they intend to go the distance.
Morocco will next face Oman on Friday, Decmber 5.
