The Mozambican football federation has announced the termination of the contract of German coach Gert Engels. The decision was made following a meeting last Thursday, three days after the team’s 6-1 defeat against Guinea in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Filipe Johane, the secretary-general of the federation, stated that the decision was not solely based on the World Cup elimination but also because the team had not shown progress under Engels since he took charge in 2012.
With Mozambique set to play against Egypt on Sunday for the 5th day of the qualifiers, former internationals João Chissano and Mano Mano will take over in the interim. The move reflects the federation’s commitment to finding a new direction for the national team after recent setbacks.
