Barcelona is considering recruiting Jérémy Mathieu from Valencia as a replacement for the departed Eric Abidal. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is seriously contemplating signing the versatile 29-year-old French defender. Mathieu, who has been a consistent performer in La Liga for the past four seasons, is known for his versatility and familiarity with Spanish football.
While there have been various high-profile names linked to Barcelona’s defense in recent weeks, Mathieu’s potential signing could offer a more understated but effective reinforcement. The report suggests that the deal could be concluded around 5 million euros, considering Mathieu’s release clause is 8 million euros.
In an interview with Spanish radio RAC1, Jérémy Mathieu expressed his thoughts on the potential move, stating, “When Barça is interested in a player, the latter necessarily thinks about going there. It would be the chance of my life. For a player of almost thirty years old, joining a club like Barça would be very interesting. I have an offer, but we’ll see.” Valencia is reportedly awaiting the new president to progress on this matter, and Mathieu indicated that discussions would take place upon his return from international duty.
