The Cameroon national team, star striker Vincent Aboubakar has sustained a serious injury just before the kick-off of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Aboubakar, as reported by the Cameroonian site “Camfoot,” suffered the injury during Friday’s training session.
The severity of the injury raises concerns about his participation in the upcoming tournament, with speculation suggesting it might force him out of the squad.
The report indicates that the injury is far from minor, casting a shadow over Aboubakar’s availability for the crucial matches in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023.
This injury compounds the challenges for Cameroon, already facing the absence of key attacking players such as Brayan Mbuemo, Jean-Pierre Nsame, and Eric Choupo-Moting in the tournament.
Vincent Aboubakar, the top scorer of the previous edition of the tournament with 8 goals, played a pivotal role in securing Cameroon’s victory in 2017 against Egypt.
The seasoned striker, aged 31, featured prominently for Besiktas in the current season, scoring 11 goals in 22 appearances.
With 97 international caps and 37 goals to his name, Aboubakar brings both experience and a prolific scoring record to the Cameroon national team.
His potential absence would be a significant blow to the team’s aspirations in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Cameroon is set to kick off their campaign in the tournament against Guinea next Monday.
Placed in Group C alongside Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea, Cameroon faces a challenging journey in their quest for continental glory, with Aboubakar’s injury adding an element of uncertainty to their prospects in the prestigious competition.
