Yaya Sanogo, the 19-year-old Franco-Ivorian striker, has shed light on the circumstances that led to his decision to join Arsenal. According to Sanogo, he approached the technical staff at AJ Auxerre, where he was playing, to inquire about the possibility of extending his contract for another year, even at a reduced salary, as a gesture of confidence in his abilities. However, he was disappointed by the response he received.
“When I asked the AJA technical staff if the club could extend me for another year, even by lowering my salary, just to show their confidence, I was told that they didn’t know if I would resort, and we left it there,” Sanogo revealed in an interview with L’Equipe.
Feeling let down by the lack of support from Auxerre, Sanogo decided to explore other options. He mentioned that he was also prepared to sign with Lille. The disappointment and the perceived lack of confidence from his former club played a significant role in influencing his decision to join Arsenal.
