Real Madrid ‘sure of victory’ in race to sign English-Ivorian defender Marc Guehi

Real Madrid are increasingly confident of securing the signature of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, with club chiefs convinced he favours a move to Spain.

Born in Abidjan, the England international has been one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, attracting interest from Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Guehi’s contract with Crystal Palace expires in June, and negotiations over an extension have yet to progress, leaving him free to discuss terms with overseas clubs from January.

Real Madrid view the 25-year-old as a key target to strengthen their defensive line ahead of next season.

According to The Sun, senior figures at the Bernabéu believe they now have the edge in the race for his signature, particularly after Guehi expressed admiration for how former England teammates Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold have adapted to life in Madrid.

Palace resisted a £35 million approach from Liverpool on transfer deadline day, but the London club could lose their captain for free next summer if a renewal is not agreed.

Despite mounting interest, Guehi has reportedly made it clear he will not leave Selhurst Park midseason, preferring to finish the campaign before making any decisions about his future.

Real Madrid’s scouting department has monitored Guehi extensively since his breakthrough at Palace, and manager Carlo Ancelotti is understood to be an admirer of his calmness under pressure and ball-playing ability.

With defensive options such as David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger in their thirties, the Spanish champions are looking to refresh their backline.

If the move materialises, Guehi would become one of the few English defenders to join Real Madrid in modern times, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Woodgate and Steve McManaman.
