The Flying Eagles of Nigeria, the U20 national football team, participated in the 41st Toulon International Espoirs Festival in France as part of their preparations for the U20 World Cup in Turkey. The team, housed in group B, faced Mexico in their opening match on a Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. UTC.
The Nigerian team, which won bronze at the last U20 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), selected 22 players for the Toulon tournament. The coaching staff aimed to use this competition to finalize the team’s training and assess the players’ performance in a competitive environment.
Six of the ten selections participating in the Toulon Festival were also qualified for the upcoming U20 World Cup scheduled to take place from June 21 to July 13. Nigeria aimed to follow in the footsteps of Ivory Coast, the only African team to win the Toulon Festival Trophy, achieving the feat in 2010.
