U20 World Cup: Nigeria edge Saudi Arabia in dramatic clash

Nigeria’s U20 team revived their hopes of reaching the last 16 at the World Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca on Thursday night.

The Flying Eagles, under pressure after an opening defeat to Norway, clinched all three points thanks to a penalty converted in the final minute.

The Nigerians made their intentions clear from the outset. Barely 10 minutes into the match, Nasiru Salihu latched onto a swift attacking move to put his side ahead.

The lead, however, was short-lived as Saudi Arabia hit back through Amad Hamed Al Yuhaybi in the 21st minute, capitalising on a lapse in the Nigerian defence.

Undeterred, Nigeria regained control of the game.

In the 38th minute, Amos Onyejefu Ochoche restored their advantage with a well-taken finish, sending the Flying Eagles into half-time in front and brimming with confidence.

But the momentum shifted again just after the break.

Saudi Arabia came out strongly and equalised in the 50th minute when Talal Haji found space in the box to slot past the Nigerian goalkeeper, making it 2-2 and setting up a tense second half.

Nigeria responded with relentless pressure, creating chance after chance but failing to convert as the Saudi defence stood firm.

Time appeared to be slipping away when a late surge into the penalty area drew a foul, and the referee pointed to the spot.

Captain Daniel Bameyi stepped up under intense pressure and coolly converted in the 90th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Nigerian players and bench.

The victory marks a vital turnaround for the Flying Eagles, who had suffered a 2-0 loss to Norway in their opening match.

With three points now secured, Nigeria remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

This hard-fought win showcased Nigeria’s resilience and attacking intent, while exposing areas for improvement in defence.

For Saudi Arabia, it was a heartbreaking end to a valiant performance that saw them equalise twice but ultimately fall short at the death.

As the group stage nears its conclusion, Nigeria’s triumph over Saudi Arabia injects fresh belief into their campaign, setting up a crucial final group match as they aim to advance to the round of 16.
