Cameroon’s absence from the upcoming African Cup of Nations has sparked reactions from key figures, including coach Jean-Paul Akono and Cape Verde Sharks striker Ryan Mendes.
Jean-Paul Akono (Indomitable Lions Coach): Expressing his disappointment, Akono stated, “It’s the feeling of a disappointed coach that is driving me at the moment. Disappointed because we played well, we won, but we didn’t qualify.” He refrained from blaming the players, acknowledging their efforts, “The guys gave everything, but the outcome was not in our favor. We did everything we had to; the players attacked, but we didn’t have the chance to equalize.” Akono recognized Cape Verde’s defensive strategy and emphasized that despite a strong performance, luck did not favor them.
Ryan Mendes (Sharks Striker): In contrast, Ryan Mendes, the Sharks striker, highlighted the historic achievement for Cape Verde: “We are making history.” He attributed their success to teamwork, saying, “We were confident because, unlike Cameroon, we play as a team, for each other. This is our strength.” Mendes emphasized the collective effort and unity as key factors in their victory over Cameroon.
