Wadi Degla finally tasted victory in the Egyptian Premier League as they edged Zed 2-1 in a spirited clash at the Arab Contractors Stadium on Monday evening.
The win, their first of the season, brought relief to players and fans who have been waiting for a breakthrough moment.
The game sparked to life in the 38th minute when Islam Kanu’s header deflected off Zed defender Mata Magassa and nestled into the net, sending the Degla bench into celebration. But just before the break, Ahmed Atef pulled Zed level in the 45+3 minute. Out of respect for his former club, Atef chose not to celebrate, a gesture that drew warm applause.
Degla refused to let the momentum slip. In the 61st minute, Ali Hussein calmly converted a penalty to restore their lead and seal a memorable night. Coach Mohamed El Sheikh praised his players’ resilience as Degla moved to 4 points and climbed to 13th place.
For Mohamed Shawky’s Zed side, the evening ended in frustration as they suffered their first defeat of the campaign, staying on 5 points in fourth.
