Tout Puissant Mazembe from DR Congo faced a surprising elimination in the African Cup, despite winning the match against Orlando Pirates 1-0 in Lumumbashi. The Ravens were defeated in the first leg 3-1, making the overall score insufficient for qualification.
Orlando Pirates, even with a player sent off in the 30th minute, delivered an impressive performance. Their goalkeeper Meyiwa played a crucial role by saving two penalties from TPM’s Bokanga and Mputu.
In another match, Zamalek successfully navigated past the challenge posed by Saint George of Ethiopia. Although Zamalek was trailing 2-1 around ten minutes before the end of the return leg (with the first leg ending 1-1), they relied on their scorer Abdoulaye Cissé, who scored a double, including the equalizer.
Orlando Pirates and Zamalek secured their places in the group stages along with teams like Esperance and Coton Sport de Garoua, who were already qualified. Mazembe and Saint-Georges will be transferred to the CAF Cup.
The remaining match between Al Ahly and CA Bizertin will determine the final team to advance to the group stages.
