Kigali – The African and Asian football confederations announced plans to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two regions.
CAF president Issa Hayatou and AFC chairman Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a candidate in the upcoming FIFA presidential election, revealed the agreement on Wednesday.
According to a CAF press release, the protocol will establish “a framework for exchange and sharing between the two confederations on the organization of high-level competitions and joint technical development programs.” Areas of cooperation will include training, refereeing, youth and women’s football, integrity, administration, marketing, media, and information technology.
A joint press conference featuring Sheikh Salman and interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou is scheduled for Friday in Kigali, Rwanda, to formally announce the agreement. The move is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen intercontinental ties ahead of the upcoming FIFA elections.
