Claude Leroy to Leave Congo After World Cup Qualification Success
French coach Claude Leroy has announced that he will leave his role as head coach of the Congo national team. Leroy, whose contract was set to expire on December 5, confirmed he would not extend his stay after guiding the Red Devils to the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
“After two great years, I decided to move on to other adventures,” Leroy said following Congo’s 2-1 victory over Ethiopia in Brazzaville. The win secured a 4-3 aggregate triumph in the second round of qualifying.
Leroy, who has also coached Cameroon, Senegal, DR Congo, and Ghana, previously led Congo to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. He holds the record for the most participations in the Africa Cup of Nations, with eight tournaments to his name.
