Morocco: Noussair Mazraoui’s participation hangs in the balance

Moroccan defender Noussair Mazraoui’s availability for AFCON 2023 remains uncertain, as he battles to overcome a persistent calf injury, signaling potential concerns for the Atlas Lions.

Despite his selection to represent Morocco at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Mazraoui has not fully recovered from the lingering calf issue, delaying his return to full training.

The Bayern Munich player has been engaged in individual training sessions at Säbener Straße, the Bayern sports center, with a gradual reintroduction to ball-related activities scheduled only for the weekend.

Mazraoui, renowned for his contributions at Ajax Amsterdam, is determined to make himself available for Coach Walid Regragui, echoing his commitment during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

During that tournament, despite grappling with COVID-related complications, Mazraoui took to the field, subsequently experiencing cardiac issues and contributing to missed matches for Bayern Munich.

The 26-year-old right-back’s relentless drive to represent his nation could potentially pose risks to both his personal well-being and the interests of his club.

The delicate balance between patriotic duty and individual health underscores the challenges faced by athletes navigating major international tournaments.

As the countdown to AFCOON 2023 continues, the Moroccan football community holds its breath, awaiting further updates on Mazraoui’s fitness and potential participation in the prestigious competition.
