Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has expressed firm belief in the current Super Eagles squad, claiming they can win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles have won the prestigious tournament on three occasions in 1980, 1994, and 2013, when they won the trophy in South Africa under late Stephen Keshi.
“The most important thing now for us is to go to Ivory Coast and win the trophy”, the Napoli striker said at dinner on Friday night to celebrate his coronation as the Africa Best Player at Super Eagles camping base in Abu Dhabi.
“I believe in this group, and we have a bunch of talented players to execute the job, fingers crossed, and we are going to do so well.”
The Napoli striker scored 10 goals during the qualifiers as he is expected to lead the Super Eagles to glory at the AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast.
Nigeria lost in the last AFCON in Cameroon against Tunisia in the Round of 16 stage and would want to rewrite the scripts this time around.
With a formidable attacking quality in-depth, spearheaded by Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Kelechi Iheanacho, amongst others, Jose Peseiro boasts of the best of attackers in the tournament.
Nigeria have been paired in Group A with hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau, an opponent they met in the qualifiers and 2015 semi-finalists Equatorial Guinea when they hosted the competition on home soil.
