Moroccan international Abdelkabir Abqar has explained his decision to join Getafe.
The 26-year-old centre-back joined the side from Deportivo Alavés on a free transfer, where he spent the past five seasons.
Abqar made 56 appearances over the last two seasons, playing a key role in helping Alavés stay in the Spanish top flight.
Known for his physical strength and anticipation, he brings experience and defensive depth to José Bordalás’ squad.
After completing his move, Abqar explained why he chose the Madrid-based club over other offers during the current transfer window.
“Getafe showed me the way from the start,” he said. “From the moment the coach called me, I saw how much they wanted me here.”
“I spoke to my agent and felt that I would be comfortable here, that I would continue developing. That’s why I’m at Getafe today.”
Abqar also praised manager José Bordalás: “He showed me how excited he was about having me and how he sees my potential to grow with the team and achieve my goals.”
The defender confirmed he had received other offers, but his talks with the sporting director and Bordalás convinced him to join Getafe.
“I’m a competitive player who loves to win. I always strive to reach the highest level possible.”
“Since joining, I’ve spoken directly with Bordalás. He asked me to give my all, to fight until the end. I’m ready. I’m eager to get started, repay the club’s trust, and help the team,” he added.
Abqar has signed a three-year deal that runs until June 2028.
