Drogba Edges Closer to Montreal Impact Move, Says Club President

Didier Drogba appears increasingly likely to continue his career in Major League Soccer (MLS) with the Montreal Impact, despite initial interest from the Chicago Fire.

The former Chelsea striker has been linked with a move to North America in recent weeks, with both clubs vying for his signature. However, Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo has revealed that the Ivorian legend is leaning towards joining the Canadian side.

Speaking to local radio station TSN 960, Saputo shared details of a recent conversation with Drogba that highlighted the player’s growing interest in Montreal.

“He didn’t hide the fact that Montreal would be the ideal solution for him,” Saputo said. “The conversation with Didier was conducted entirely in French, which was reassuring for him. He asked a lot of questions about the city — he inquired about his children’s schooling and everything else. He’s checking a lot of boxes.”

The comments suggest that the 37-year-old, who ended his second stint at Chelsea earlier this year, is carefully considering not just footballing factors but also family and lifestyle as he weighs up his next move.

Chicago Fire had reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign Drogba, but this latest development signals a shift in momentum. Montreal’s French-speaking environment and strong Ivorian community could prove decisive in swaying the former Premier League star’s decision.

While no official agreement has been announced, Montreal Impact officials remain hopeful that the talks will result in Drogba donning the club’s colours in the near future.

A move to MLS would mark the latest chapter in a glittering career for Drogba, who is best known for his time at Chelsea, where he scored over 100 goals and helped the club win four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
