Mido Returns to Coaching with Ismaily SC Appointment
Former Egyptian international Ahmed Hossam “Mido” has returned to management, taking the reins at Ismaily Sporting Club, one of Egypt’s most historic football teams.
The 32-year-old, who was dismissed by Zamalek last year following a string of disappointing results, has now been handed a fresh opportunity to revive his coaching career with the “Yellow Dragons.”
A well-known figure in Egyptian and international football, Mido enjoyed a successful playing career in Europe, featuring for clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Olympique de Marseille, Tottenham Hotspur, and AS Roma. Since hanging up his boots, he has taken up several coaching roles, including stints at Zamalek and Wadi Degla.
Ismaily SC, based in the city of Ismailia, is one of Egypt’s most storied football institutions. Founded in 1924, the club has a passionate following and is widely regarded as the third most supported side in Egypt after perennial giants Al Ahly and Zamalek.
The club will be hoping Mido can inject fresh energy into the squad and guide Ismaily back to domestic prominence. His task will be to build a competitive team capable of challenging for top honours in the Egyptian Premier League, where Ismaily has not lifted the title since 2002.
The appointment marks a significant chapter for both Mido and the club. Ismaily, known for its attractive brand of football, has seen a revolving door of coaches in recent years, while Mido will be eager to prove himself once more in the Egyptian top flight after previous mixed spells on the touchline.
Mido’s return to the dugout has been met with cautious optimism by fans, many of whom recall his bold tactical approach and straightforward style. However, expectations will be high at a club with rich traditions and a long-standing desire to reestablish itself among the country’s elite.
With pre-season preparations underway, Mido is expected to begin work immediately with his squad, as he aims to shape a team capable of competing with the league’s heavyweights.
Only time will tell whether the former striker can replicate his on-field success from Europe and deliver silverware to a club hungry for glory.
