CAMEROON: SÉBASTIEN BASSONG SIGNS FOR NORWICH

Bassong

Cameroon ian defender Sébastien Bassong has signed a three-year contract with English Premier League club Norwich after facing tough competition at Tottenham. The presence of William Gallas, Michael Dawson, and the new addition Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane led to Bassong feeling confined.

Even in the previous season, Bassong lacked the confidence of then-manager Harry Redknapp, resulting in a loan to Wolverhampton for the last six months. The Clairefontaine-trained player, who had previously played for FC Metz in France and later joined Newcastle in 2008 for a fee of £500,000, is well-acquainted with the English Premier League.

Named the “best player of the Magpies” in 2008-2009, Bassong was lured to Tottenham in 2009 for £8 million after 30 appearances with Newcastle. Following 44 matches with Tottenham, including scoring the club’s first Champions League goal in 2010, Bassong, under the leadership of Ledley King and William Gallas, went on loan to Wolverhampton for the end of the season.

Norwich manager Chris Hughton, who previously had Bassong under his command at Newcastle, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, “Sébastien is a player I know well, having had him under my command at Newcastle. I’m excited to have a player with such great Premier League experience. He will bring us his power and his sense of the game,” during the press conference on Tuesday.

Sébastien Bassong, who has earned 15 caps with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, joined the national team in 2009 after representing the French under-21 team.
