2024 WAFCON: Roselène Khezami named Player of the Match after heroic display against Nigeria

Algeria’s Roselène Khezami was named Player of the Match following her commanding performance in the goalless draw against Nigeria on Sunday evening during the final round of the group stage at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

In a fiercely contested encounter, Khezami stood out as a pillar of strength at the heart of the Algerian defence, helping her side hold off one of the continent’s most dangerous attacking forces.

The result ensured Algeria completed the group stage unbeaten and without conceding a single goal.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) highlighted Khezami’s resilience, composure, and leadership in awarding her the honour.

The centre-back, tasked with containing Nigeria’s potent frontline, rose to the occasion with a composed and disciplined display that frustrated the Super Falcons throughout the match.

Speaking after the game, the Algerian international reflected on the team’s achievement and her individual recognition.

I’m very happy because we showed a lot of strength of character against a good Nigerian team, which needs no introduction, Khezami said. We finished the group stage without conceding a single goal, which is truly perfect. Now we have to stay strong and keep up the pace until the end to try to reach the semi-finals.

While proud of her personal accolade, Khezami was quick to deflect praise toward her teammates.

For the best player of the match award, I’m obviously very happy, but it’s also the result of a team effort, she added.

Algeria’s defensive solidity has been a hallmark of their campaign so far, with Khezami emerging as one of the tournament’s standout defenders.

Her leadership at the back has provided a solid foundation for the team, who now look ahead to a challenging quarter-final clash with Ghana.

As Algeria continues its journey in Morocco, Khezami’s consistency and form will be vital to the nation’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time in its Women’s AFCON history.

For now, her display against Nigeria not only secured a valuable point but also served as a testament to her growing stature on the continental stage.
