The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a formal investigation into Algeria’s women’s national team over potential breaches of its statutes and regulations in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
While CAF did not disclose the specific nature of the suspected violations, it confirmed in a brief statement that no further comments would be made until the inquiry is concluded.
The move comes amid a series of incidents involving the Algerian team that have raised eyebrows beyond the football pitch.
Since the tournament kicked off on July 5, Algerian state media has conspicuously downplayed or omitted any references to host nation Morocco.
In a number of press conferences and public appearances, official Algerian broadcasters have cropped footage to exclude Moroccan insignia and other national imagery.
One notable episode involved the sudden disappearance of Royal Air Maroc (RAM)—an official tournament sponsor—from the sponsor backdrop during a media briefing with Algeria’s head coach.
The RAM logo appeared to have been digitally replaced with that of another sponsor, TotalEnergies, raising concerns about possible image manipulation.
Despite remaining active in the tournament, Algeria now finds itself under increasing scrutiny as CAF proceeds with its investigation.
